The power of sport to tackle gender inequality has become increasingly evident in recent years. With this in mind, streetfootballworld launched Levelling the Playing Field in 2015, a football-based programme aimed at strengthening the leadership and coaching skills of young women in Cambodia. Levelling the Playing Field is very much a team effort. The programme includes support from the German Foreign Office, a leadership camp conducted by Women Win and implementation from the SALT Academy and streetfootballworld. It also draws on the expertise of guest coach and adviser Monika Staab, German Football Ambassador 2014.

Levelling the Playing Field employs a range of different activities to engage its young participants, such as peer-mentoring, community development trainings and inclusive football tournaments. It also connects each of these participants to other female coaches and footballers from all over Cambodia. But this is just the beginning. As the young female leaders begin emerging as multipliers over time, they will increasingly take responsibility for building the capacity of other girls in their respective communities – amplifying the project’s overall impact.
