In March 2007, FIFA and streetfootballworld signed a strategic alliance in the field of „Social Development through Football“. The alliance represents a new dimension of cooperation between the two organisations that, through football, is designed to make a substantial contribution to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
The agreement between FIFA and streetfootballworld focuses on two main areas of cooperation: (1) policy management in the field of “Social Development through Football” as well as (2) the implementation and development of the common Football for Hope Movement.
Through this alliance, both partners are celebrating the values, popularity, universal nature and appeal of football. Over decades, the game has proven to be an ideal instrument in the most varied social and cultural contexts for promoting social development and tackling some of the biggest problems the world currently faces.
FIFA and streetfootballworld have been using football as an instrument for social development for more than a decade and in a variety of different ways. But it was only two years ago that the two organisations came together with the goal of developing the field together, to consolidate the work of local organisations and with common energy to pursue even bigger targets. The Football for Hope Movement is the key element of this strategic alliance.
The objective of the Football for Hope Movement is to establish a quality seal for sustainable social and human development programmes focusing on football as the central tool in the areas of health promotion, peace building, anti-discrimination and social integration, children's rights and education, as well as environment, and therewith support best practise in the field.
As one of the first concrete results of this alliance, a knowledge platform will be developed during the course of 2007 on the topic of “Social Development through Football”. Additionally, several streetfootballworld network members and regional events worldwide will receive financial support within the framework of Football for Hope for their efforts towards sustainable development.
In 2010, the social dimension of the game will be celebrated during a huge festival in South Africa parallel to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The preparations have already begun!
