Jul 232010 | Spirit of Soccer brings Mine Risk Education to Iraq

Hot on the heels of its Cambodian delegation lifting the Football for Hope Festival 2010 Fair Play award, streetfootballworld network member Spirit of Soccer held a “90-Minute Cease Fire” Mine Risk Education (MRE) session in Kirkuk, Iraq.

The course brought together over 160 Kurd, Arab and Turkaman coaches and young people. Fifty-four coaches, including 15 women, graduated in coaching and promoting basic but effective MRE messages.

Despite some small arms fire in a nearby neighbourhood and 44°C weather, the session went off without a hitch.

“Humanity perseveres throughout all conditions,” said Spirit of Soccer Director Scott Lee, who went on to thank the organisation’s supporters and Protective Services for their continued efforts.

The session follows Scott’s call for a 90-minute worldwide cease fire during the World Cup final match, which he made upon winning the Most Courageous Use of Sport Award at the Beyond Sport Summit in 2009.
