The selection process for 20 Centres for 2010 is almost complete!
Football for Hope Centre locations have been confirmed in Botswana, Cape
Verde, Zimbabwe, Mauritania and DR Congo.
Ramotswa, Botswana
streetfootballworld network member SEDYEA has been chosen to host the
centre in Ramotswa in the South-East District of Botswana. Close to the
border with South Africa, the centre will provide sport and educational
facilities for local villages.
With a focus on peer education and youth leadership, SEDYEA uses
football to raise awareness of health issues and gender inequality. In
an area with limited employment opportunities, the organisation empowers
young people to create change in their communities.
Tarrafal, Cape Verde
The fishing port of Tarrafal in Cape Verde has been selected as the site
for the 16th Football for Hope Centre. Hosted by streetfootballworld
network member Delta Cultura Cabo Verde (DCCV), the centre will provide a
range of activities for young people from socially disadvantaged
backgrounds.
Using a threefold approach based on football, culture and education,
DCCV works to create better opportunities for young Cape Verdeans.
Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
The Zimbabwe branch of streetfootballworld network member Grassroot
Soccer will host the Football for Hope Centre in Bulawayo. The centre
will serve six surrounding township neighbourhoods with a combined
population of around 100,000 people.
Grassroot Soccer has worked in Bulawayo since 2003, using the power of football to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.
Nouakchott, Mauritania
The centre in Mauritania will be located in the capital city of
Nouakchott. Hosted by local NGO Espoir, the centre will provide
much-needed infrastructure for local communities.
Espoir has worked to fight poverty in Mauretania since 1992, with a special focus on women’s rights.
Kalebuka, DR Congo
The 19th Football for Hope Centre will be located in the village of
Kalebuka, close to the second largest city in DR Congo, Lubumbashi. The
centre will be hosted by the Georges Malaika Foundation, which is
committed to improving educational facilities in the underserved
community of Kalebuka.
All of the newly confirmed centres are currently in the design phase.
