streetfootballworld network members United Action for Children (UAC) from Cameroon and Iringa Development of Youth Disabled and Child Care (IDYDC) in Tanzania have been named as the 13th and 14th Football for Hope Centre Hosts.
As part of the 20 Centres for 2010 initiative, UAC have been selected to host a centre in Mamfe, Cameroon.
Founded in 2002, United Action for Children uses football to get young people off the streets and into classrooms. The network member also promotes conflict resolution and public awareness of HIV/AIDS.
Mamfe, a community in Cameroon with about 15,000 residents, is in dire need of quality sports, recreational, educational and health facilities. Orock Eyong, Project Coordinator at UAC, believes that “this centre will go a long way towards making the activities of streetfootballworld and particularly UAC become sustainable in Cameroon.”
A catalyst for society
The Iringa region in Tanzania will be the site of the 14th Football for Hope Centre.
IDYDC have been running programmes since 1991 in the Iringa region of Tanzania. They have a focus on health, vocational training and providing micro-financing to improve the living standard of disadvantaged young people in the region.
Johnnie Nkoma, Executive Director at IDYDC, says of the new centre: “IDYDC, the government and the community are happy to have this opportunity to host the Football for Hope Centre. The centre will stimulate the youth development though football and social and economic development of community of Iringa and Tanzania in general.”
