South African Homeless Street Soccer (SAHSS) uses football as a means of involving children and youths that live, work and sleep on the streets in positive activities that will assist them in moving off the streets to better lives. SAHSS is an initiative of local NGOs who work in close cooperation with the Departments of Social Development and Sports and Recreation in the City of Cape Town. These groups have come together in the WCSSL because of an acute awareness of the role that football can play in changing the lives of homeless and disadvantaged people.
Over 500 youths from 12 local networks in the Cape Town region meet on a weekly basis. Each team comes from a community organisation, all of which have a rich history of programmes assisting street people. In cooperation with these organisations SAHSS is using football to foster healthy individual development, teach positive values and life skills, strengthen education, prevent disease through education (particularly HIV/AIDS) and provide health and well-being.
