The Street Socceroos at the Homeless World Cup 2009

They may not have won the cup itself, but Australia’s Street Socceroos did win the hearts of the world at this year’s Homeless World Cup in Milan, Italy.

The feeling from inside the Homeless World Cup camp was one of camaraderie and enthusiasm with the team enjoying every moment, win or lose.

"Spectators from all over the world fell in love with our guys," Street Socceroos National Coach George Halkias said.

"Their smiles, enthusiasm and good sportsmanship were definitely crowd pleasers."

The Street Socceroos’ sportsmanship was so good that the team earned the Homeless World Cup’s Fair Play Award.

Reports from the Street Socceroos’ players were also positive.

"Since I’ve been on this program, it’s been the first time I’ve been on a plane" Street Socceroos’ goalkeeper Beau Tyson said.

"I’ve been to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Dubai, Milan and it's been fantastic. I’ve beaten all my goals. It’s great to play for my country and be the first Aboriginal to do so."

Another Street Socceroos player, Scott Endersby, is now planning to work to give his young son every possible opportunity when he returns to Australia.

While the Homeless World cup was a great experience, it was just one week. The focus now lies with the heart of The Big Issue’s Community Street Soccer program, which is week-in week-out training at sites all across Australia.
