Mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia can often result in isolation and a lack of social stimulation. Start Again is an innovative, newly established social enterprise conceived in 2007 operating in Birmingham and the West Midlands to support young people suffering with mental ill health. Their mission is to develop the personal, spiritual and social development of young people with a specific focus on the needs of individuals experiencing or recovering from mental health problems.
All of Start Again’s activities use football as an early intervention to provide opportunities for social integration; providing participants with friends, support and purpose. Activities are designed to enhance participants “soft” skills such as communication and interaction, and these are monitored accordingly. Start Again work closely with the local health authorities, with members of the target group referred to the project by mental health workers and health care professionals.
