|
Top Performers Presented Opportunity to Travel to Germany Soccer in the Streets, an organization that
teaches less advantaged kids how to make
positive choices and be successful in life
through soccer, is partnering with the German
Consulate to host its annual German Street
Soccer Cup in two multicultural cities:
Atlanta, April 26 at Riverwood High School
and Miami, May 3 at the German American Club
of Greater Miami. Attendance is free to both
events. The German Street Soccer Cup will require kids ages 12-16 from different backgrounds to form a team and work together. Each team is required to have a Spanish and German speaker. The games are intended to be fun, and to bridge cultural gaps while exposing the kids to other languages. "Soccer has been a great way for us to teach our kids about different cultures," said Jill Robbins, executive director for Soccer in the Streets. "The format of our tournaments stress tolerance and gives kids of different cultures and backgrounds an opportunity to play together." Players who qualify as all-stars will have the opportunity to travel to Germany to compete. The tournament also recognizes the student with the best cultural experience or tournament blog posting. The winner will receive the "Todo Alemán Young Journalist Award" and travel to Germany with the all-star team as a reporter for Todo Alemán, a blog highlighting the German culture around the world. The top 10 entries will be featured on the new community platform site, Todo Alemán. Soccer in the Streets was recently awarded the "Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT) Friend of World Languages Award" for its efforts to introduce youth to foreign languages through the German Street Soccer Cup event."We are thrilled to partner with such a focused organization like Soccer in the Streets," said Consul General Lutz Görgens. "This event serves as a great opportunity to get the participants more interested in learning the German language while having fun playing our country's favorite sport." |
