Moving the Goalposts Kilifi (MTGK) is a community organisation based in the Kilifi district of Kenya that since 2001 has used the power of football to promote football excellence and youth leadership among young women and girls. All activities are organised by the girls themselves and follow the principles of the peer education programme. The aim of the programmes is to help empower the young women to break from the cycle of poverty that is prevalent in their communities. At present MTGK works with over 3000 players, aged from 8 to 42 years old and the organisation trains peers from the community to work as referees, coaches, first aid workers and administrators.
MTGK uses football to inform girls about social issues and anti-discrimination, children’s rights and education and general health promotion. Its vision is ‘Tunaweza’ (Kiswahili for ‘we can do it’), which is implemented through various activities including a ‘Football, Leadership and Lifeskills Project’ in which about 150 female football teams participate. The ‘Coach the coach’ project trains female coaches, thereby developing girls’ leadership skills as well as their football excellence. Other projects are concerned with addressing issues such as reproductive health and providing young women with business skills in order that they can set up and run their own small businesses. In order to evaluate their success in providing young women with life skills, MTGK has set up its own participatory M&E tool run by four young female MTGK participants.
