America SCORES (AS) was founded in 1994 in Washington, D.C. under the name “D.C. Scores” as a football programme for girls in elementary schools. Now, AS is the national umbrella for affiliate programmes in 14 US metropolitan areas, working with 5500 public school students. Its aim is to empower young people in urban communities using football, writing, creative expression and service learning, with additional elements of health promotion and conflict resolution integrated into these programme components.
The 14 AS affiliate programmes employ, in total, approximately 900 full-time staff members to work daily with the young participants; they also engage thousands of volunteers nationwide.
