WhizzKids United’s goal is to provide HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment and support for youth worldwide using football as the medium. Achieving this goal is an enormous challenge. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to bear the brunt of the world’s biggest global health challenge, HIV/AIDS, with an estimated 29 million people infected, many of whom are children. In order to reduce the rate of infection, WhizzKids United uses football to teach young people the necessary life skills to avoid infection and provides continual follow up support through its WKU Health Academies.
By providing a unique and holistic approach to HIV/AIDS WhizzKids United is able to provide long term support for youth which is essential if we are to successfully create positive behavioural change amongst them. Incorporating elements and principles from the 'beautiful game', WhizzKids United ensures that behavioural change is created in a fun and motivational learning environment. Using football as an analogy, experts inform participants of the risks of HIV infection and about preventative measures. The life skills taught range from health-orientated values to specific capabilities which are designed to help the children react with confidence and knowledge to the obstacles and dangers of everyday life.
