Football for Hope

PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL MEETS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS

Football for Hope

The Football for Hope Movement is the key element of the strategic alliance between FIFA and streetfootballworld. It was created to enhance dialogue and collaboration between locally active organisations advancing social development and football associations, committed clubs and players, professional leagues as well as involved commercial partners. The Movement aims to utilise the role of football in society in order to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.

A strategic alliance geared towards the Millennium Development Goals
streetfootballworld and FIFA have been using football as an instrument for social development for many years in a variety of ways. However, it was not until 2005 that the two entities started working together in order to maximise the potential of football as a significant contributor towards the achievement of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Football for Hope Movement is the key element of this strategic alliance, led by FIFA in its capacity as world football's governing body and streetfootballworld as the driving force behind a global network of organisations that develop projects on the ground, in which football is the central element.

A quality seal for sustainable, football-based development programmes
The objective of the Football for Hope Movement is to establish a quality seal for sustainable social and human development programmes working with football as the central tool in the areas of Health Promotion, Peace Building, Anti-Discrimination & Social Integration, Children's Rights & Education and the Environment, thus supporting best practise in the field. The programmes must be aimed at children and young people, and use football as an instrument to promote participation and dialogue.

Toolbox, Funding scheme, Forum and Festival
Several activities fill the Football for Hope Movement with life. The Football for Hope Toolbox, a resource centre on Development through Football, provides practitioners with valuable input for their work (estimated date of publication: end of 2008). On an internal online working platform, organisations and experts in the sector exchange knowledge and coordinate common activities (to be launched beginning of 2009). The Funding Scheme of Football for Hope provides support to selected members of the streetfootballworld Network. Several events set the milestones of the Movement, above all the Football for Hope Festivals – as official elements of the FIFA World Cup™ - and the Football for Hope Forums, as high profile, practically oriented conferences on Development through Football taking place during the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Football for Hope – 20 Centres for 2010 Campaign
In the past, FIFA has launched large awareness-raising and fund-raising campaigns for social causes within the framework of the World Cup. In 2010, football itself will be the driving force behind the Official Campaign. The world of professional football and fans worldwide will have the opportunity to donate a small sum for each goal scored in the FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers. The revenues from the campaign will enable the construction of at least 20 Football for Hope Centres across Africa that combine sport, health and educational facilities.
