Siyakhona photo contest
'Siyakhona’ [see-ya-koh-na] means ‘we can’
in the common South African languages Zulu and Xhosa.

Each of the 32 delegations participating in the Football for Hope Festival 2010 received a “Siyakhona kit” containing digital cameras, a laptop, GPS and photo printer as well as other photography equipment.

The delegations were asked to document their lives, their organisations and their preparation toward the Football for Hope Festival 2010.

For the Siyakhona Photo Contest each delegation selected two pictures that best show their organisation, what football means to them, their friends, where they come from or simply what is important to them.

After all the votes were counted, the following delegations' photographs emerged as the favourites.

About Siyakhona
Siyakhona trains young people from disadvantaged communities to be photographers and video journalists. Siyakhona is part of Sony's collaboration with FIFA on corporate social responsibility and is implemented through Football for Hope, the movement led by FIFA and streetfootballworld.

The programme operates on two levels:

Global

A global level uses digital photography to tell the story of Football for Hope by unlocking the potential of young people for whom football is much more than just a game. By providing local organisations with digital photography equipment, training and the support of Sony staff in their area, it raises the capacity of these organisations to communicate and tell their stories. A multilingual training DVD produced specially for Siyakhona takes young photographers step-by-step through an introduction to digital photography and how to produce exciting and informative pictures.

African

An African level focuses on training young people in some of the most disadvantaged communities in South Africa in video ‘citizen journalism’: two groups of six young people who are not currently in education or employment are taken through an intensive course in all aspects of video production. Two ‘hubs’ of digital video have been created in township communities where participants will produce community-focused films and raise awareness of social issues long after the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Siyakhona will tell the story of Football for Hope and the impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ and will leave a legacy of valuable resources in disadvantaged communities around the world, including increased skills and capacity at Football for Hope Implementing Organisations.
