EUROSCHOOLS 2008
FOOTBALL UNITES
Which is the smallest country in Europe? Where exactly is Uppsala? And why do 26 ethnic groups call Georgia home? In the international EUROSCHOOLS 2008 project, pupils from schools in Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are set to become experts on Europe! And not only that – for an entire year, they will be ambassadors for the 53 UEFA countries and of fair play. Both on and off the pitch!
Schools as Ambassadors of the 53 UEFA-Countries International communication, tolerance and Fair Play are central for the official project of the UEFA EURO 2008™. Numerous schools in Switzerland, Austria and in Liechtenstein are actively preparing for this spectacular occasion and for the task of being hosts.
The schools will take on the roles of ambassadors of the 53 countries represented in the UEFA. The pupils will learn about various aspects of intercultural dialogue and compete for the European championship title according to Fair Play rules in teams of girls and boys. Using football as a means of education and learning, EUROSCHOOLS 2008 offers a year of exciting encounters and experiences for football-loving youths.
Project goals
• Enhancement of Fair Play on and off the pitch. The concept of treating each other in a fair manner is a fundamental element of the game (girls and boys play together in one team without a referee with additional Fair Play points)
• Raising awareness of the cultural diversity of Europe through the project work in school and the active exchange with the 53 UEFA-countries
• The EURO 2008 as a means of getting youths and children, as well as teachers and parents active across Europe
• Children, youths, teachers and parents dealing with Fair Play and international communication effectively leaves a legacy that will have an impact far beyond 2008.
The project course and activities
Countries are allocated to the participating schools, hence the schools must deal with the countries over the course of one school year, adopting the role of ambassadors. In preparation for the international final tournament, the pupils will organise their own football tournament and take part in the EUROSCHOOLS CUPS. All of the 53 UEFA-countries will be represented by “ambassadors” from Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland at the final.
The Cups and the final round of matches will take place at the same time as the EURO 2008 in 8 cities in the host countries. Girls and boys play together in the teams made up of 4-6 players within the age range of 12 to 15 years. The focus of the content is on intercultural dialogue and Fair Play, which the schools will deal with in the course of their zear as an ambassador. The schools are required to organise a tournament according to the “Fair Play Football” method and a project day where they will present “their” new country.
